The choice of carpeting is one of the most important decisions a homeowner can make. But before shopping for a particular style, colour or brand, it is best to discuss the different types of fibres in Carpets. In this article we will do just that as we weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each.
Wool carpet is easily the most expensive type of carpet fibre. The reason for this is simple: it is a natural fibre. It is also one of the softest and most durable fibres on the market. The one drawback is that wool is more difficult and expensive to maintain that synthetic fibres. In fact, most chemical cleaners and bleaches will damage wool carpets. Nylon carpet, on the other hand, has an extremely high stain-resistance. Not surprisingly, it is a durable carpet fibre that works well in high traffic areas like hallways, family rooms and even on the stairs. The main disadvantages of Nylon fibre is that it is a tough fibre that can be damaged by excessive moisture. Polyester carpet is virtually identical to Nylon. It is highly durable, stain resistant and it is ideal for high traffic areas. Its main drawbacks are that it may attract dirt and it is not soft.
Lastly, we have olefin carpet. This synthetic fibre is extremely durable and unlike nylon and polyester it has a high resistance to dirt and moisture. The main knock on of olefin is that it is so tough that it can actually be uncomfortable to walk on in bare feet.
